Guest: Nic Starr – The Lure of the Comfort Read

Thanks for having me visit, Andrew. It’s an honour to be appearing on your blog. I hope you don’t mind, but I wanted to talk a little bit about you and your books, to the readers of your blog. J

So here goes…

I’ll let you in on a little secret. I really like Andrew’s books and I mean really like them. Andrew Grey is one of my go-to authors. You know the author you turn to when you need a comfort read? Someone you choose to read because you know you’ll be guaranteed a story that hits all the right buttons? Andrew Grey is that, and more, for me.

I was on Goodreads the other day. I use the site to catalogue all the m/m books I want to read, own, or have read. When you have as many books as I have on the Kindle, it helps to have a way of tracking them! Anyway, I was checking my bookshelves and decided to see who were my Most Read Authors. Guess who was at the top of the list?

Most Read Author--Andrew Grey

Oh my God! I’ve read 44 of Andrew’s books, which surely goes a long way to showing how much I enjoy his stories. Seeing the volume of books, got me thinking about what makes certain authors so appealing, and results in so many of their books being read by one person. For me it comes down to a few things.

Firstly, it’s about comfort reads. There are certain authors who tick the boxes with what I’m looking for in a comfort read. I return to them often because I know I can find the story elements I’m looking for. Personally, my comfort reads feature nice guys, sweeter stories, and a happy ever after. I have friends who find their comfort in hugely emotional, darker, angsty stories. We’re all different.

Obviously, to keep me coming back, I also need to enjoy an author’s writing style, and I need to like their plots and characters. But it’s also about consistency. With certain authors, I know what to expect when I pick up any of their books.

Series is also a determining factor. I love a series where I know the characters and the places. It feels like I’m visiting with old friends. Once I start reading a series, I find it hard to stop until I get to the end. Prime example? It’s thanks to the 32 books in Carol Lynne’s Cattle Valley series, that she takes the second spot on my Most Read Authors list. J

I hope you have some great authors on your comfort reads list. If you’re reading this blog then Andrew is most likely on your list. We’re just lucky Andrew writes a lot!

Have a great day!

Nic xx

You nailed it! Andrew’s books contain everything I want, real fully formed characters. Tough subjects and happy endings – absolutely my go-to author. I realize how much time I spend trying to find that magic in other books I read. I will definitely be looking for your book when its published, sounds right up my alley!
