My mother and father live outside Baltimore Maryland in a condominium complex. If you read Eastern Cowboy, then you already know something about it because its their light blue condos that surround one portion of the farm in the story. All around their area are houses, condos, strip centers and a single farm. This farm is really old and looks rather forlorn sitting off by itself in the largely urbanized landscape. The are is called Shipley’s Grant. I must confess that I know very little about the property, but every time I drove by it, I couldn’t help thinking there was a story behind it. So like any good writer, I made up my own story.
I do wish I could tell you where Tanner and Brighton came form within my imagination, but I don’t really know. Sometimes I think there’s a well of people and personalities inside my head and I hope it never runs dry. The aunt in the story however is another issue. I based her loosely on a relative of mine. Thankfully it isn’t likely she’ll ever read this or the story, so I’m fairly safe on that score.
