One of the questions I get asked all the time is about the covers for my books. Most publishers give the author limited input on the covers for their titles. Dreamspinner Press is quite different. Ads part of the production process, each authors fills out a cover request for, to describe our characters and the type of cover we’d like. Then the art department starts their magic and they go some initial mockups. As an author we work with our cover artist until we are both happy with the cover. Sometimes, the process is very fast and other times it takes a while.
For example with Love Comes Silently, it took almost 2 dozen tries before we arrived at the cover you see. Mostly because the pink hat wasn’t right. On the other hand, the cover for The Lone Rancher, was very quick with only minor changes. It all depends on the title and how the author and cover artist see things.
I am so grateful to Dreamspinner for the way they do things. I have author friends who tell me that they have a new book coming out and that they hate the cover, but there was nothing they could do about it. That isn’t DSP and I love them for it.
